I actually had the exact same problem.  For me the problem was that I
had an IRQ conflict with my modem.  Everything seemed to work fine.. but
then when it went to connect, nothing..  Also in your /etc/ppp/options
file make sure you have 'debug' in there.  Then try to connect and check
your /var/log/messages and /var/log/debug files.  This should give you
SOME information about what's going.  Also you might have an
authentication problem..  Have you modified pap-secrets or
chap-secrets.. 

I don't know if any of that will help.. good luck though
