there's actually 3 new filesystems being developed for Linux. ext3,
reiserfs, XFS. I haven't heard ext3 make any noise recently... seems to
still be in the "i wish we had these features in ext2" phase. Reiserfs
(which has some of the wanted ext3 features, including journaling, but
journaling won't be added until later) recently made some noise on the
linux-kernel mailing list. It may make it into the 2.3/2.4 kernel within
a few weeks, or at least have up-to-date "stable" patches for them. One
of the developers mentioned only having one known bug left and received
several replies on how to fix it. XFS is still being waited on.
Everyone is expecting it eventually, but no one is planning on it's
arrival just yet. That's good though, it makes sure something modern is
coming. The XFS articles just say "the results of this announcement
remain to be seen."
