There is a software watchdog kernel option in the standard kernel, which
requires a user-level daemon counterpart.  If the daemon stops telling the
kernel it's alive each minute the kernel will reboot the computer.  If
your kernel hangs, it can't do anything.  You need some watchdog hardware
to help with that.
