[PLUG] resnet

Chances are the problems with the slow networks on campus networks are
because of the new off-campus resnet. Apparently, the new 56K dialups and
ADSL via GTE (Campus Agreement) are both routed through the Purdue Backbone.
It may be cheaper, for people off-campus to go with this new discounted
service with GTE, but then you have to look at the total bandwidth of the
University. Since everything is going through Purdue's Backbone, that means
unless Purdue increases their bandwidth, things will slow down a lot.

My suggestion is just to go with GTE's ADSL service (not through Purdue) ...
It might be an extra $20 a month compared to the Campus Agreement, but it's
still a heck of a lot faster than the service via Purdue. If you're
on-campus, the networks are suffering because of Purdue's inability to
handle the added network traffic with off-campus RESNET.

This is all put together from heresay and talking with a lot of people on
campus and I'm not making any kind of official statement, but that's my
guess why the networks are slow and erratic.
