If you read the orginial message it says "unless I use the bootdisk
that I have."

I think that after booting with a disk you have to do more than just run
lilo.  You run lilo -c /mnt/harddrivemount/etc/lilo.conf

or something along those lines... so that lilo uses the lilo.conf on the
orginial harddrive and not the boot disk.
