I went back and read the original thread and remember now some peculiarities with
the emu10k module that I ran into when setting it up myself.  It doesn't seem to
map to the mixer board logically.  When I first tried to get headphones to work
with my SB Live, my speakers would work fine while my headphones didn't make a
sound.  I tried messing around with the KDE mixer app, and when I moved one of the
sliders, my speakers began to fade out and the headphones faded in.  Moving other
sliders also caused other volume oddities.  It seems stupid, but see if just
messing with the mixer will get sound working.

Also, I have had problems with getting it to work right with ESD. Whenever the
system becomes the slightest bit busy, ESD gets stuck in a loop for a second
playing the last sound over and over.  Try just using OSS by itself for now.
