(a) Denote the force of friction exerted on the elevator as f and the speed
of the elevator as v just before it hits the spring. Use the work-energy
theorem: W = mgd - fd = .5mv^2. solve for v

(b) use,
>mg(h+x)-f(h+x)=(1/2)kx^2,
>f is friction force....solve for x.

(c) (c) Let the distance the elevator will bounce back up the shaft be y,
then work-energy
theorem gives .5kx^2 - mgy - fy, solve for y.

(d) figure it out buddy.
