Sorry, no. FreeBSD has excellent support for UI. It comes through the
fact it has C++ exceptions support (used extensively by your favorite
UIs), X support, yadda yadda. If Linux can run it, FreeBSD should be
able to, too. That is unless their code is unportable and sucks (see
also svgalib). Not that I've had time to waste on that lately, of course.
Other developers in the FreeBSD project have told me they are already
working on a port, so... the original point was that it's bad style to
hardcode OS's when you should be checking for the interfaces you need.

Of course I'm sure you realized that StarOffice depends on X, which is
pretty much every Unix out there. Extensions may depend on other
things, like C++ exceptions as I suggested.

Gee, you talk about a lot of other environments as though you've
actually used them but then go on to sing your praises for OpenStep.
Well gosh damn it, I'm pretty sure you're just quite happy with what
you've got running there.   ;->

Although I'm not by any means a KDE/GNOME/<insert environment here> fan,
I do appreciate the power, style, and sleekness afforded step
environments, such as Window Maker. ;-)
