Well, speaking as the chief "whore", (the instructor for CS180,)
I would like to reiterate that the current incarnation of the course
is NOT Microsoft specific.
While our lab environment uses Visual J++ on Windoze, students
are perfectly welcome to use Unix environments for all of their
projects. In fact, all of our major assignments are actually
written on Unix machines, and all of the students' solutions are
run and graded on Unix machines. Just today in lecture,
the demonstration programs I ran were all command-line Java programs
on my Linux box.
So, Mark, please install Linux on your machine, and don't worry
about trying to run Visual Studio under Wine or Wabi. All of the
tools you require for your CS programming courses are available,
for free, on Linux.
