I don't know why you are having the difficulties you are. That's just
strange. If you can hold off a couple weeks, come to installfest and
we'll help ya out.

Something that could help would be for you to list out every piece of
hardware on your computer. You keep saying you have an ATA controller,
but so does pretty much every motherboard made in the last two years.
Is it an add on PCI controller?

I'd say for you to try out Mandrake. It's availabe on CSociety's
server. Use ftp or http://csociety-ftp.ecn.purdue.edu. They've got
ISOs for Mandrake and RedHat. Mandrake is pretty good at detecting
funky hardware etc.

As for what everyone was talking about with regards to XFree86 (the
Xwindows system for many Unices), there are two different major
releases. Currently 3.3.6 and 4.0.2. The latter is known as XFree4.
XFree4 is a complete redesign of the previous X. I think. It's much
different so I'm only assuming they rewrote most of it. XFree3 and 4
both support many graphics cards, but some aren't supported under each.
XFree3 probably doesn't support the newest of graphics cards. If I
recall correctly, Corel has basically dropped their Linux distro. It
hasn't really been updated in a while. To my knowledge anyway. It was
never that great to begin with.

Try Mandrake. If that doesn't work, well, bring it to installfest and
I'm sure some of the gurus we'll get it going. Send us a list of what
hardware you've got. You may also want to check the hardware
compatibility lists at Mandrake's website (http://www.linux-mandrake.com).
