That should work fine.  It's not your Mandrake server, more likely
it's your Mandrake default client setup.  You can override using
~/.ssh/config to allow Xforwarding.  I'm not sure if that will fix
your problem, but...  I've never had trouble doing ssh+xforward on
any combination of machines.
