Mutt can be configured to read IMAP and POP3 mail, but for the maximum
flexibility you'll want to use fetchmail. Mutt has very good
documentation, I suggest you read it if you really want to understand
how everything works.
You'll also need a configured MTA on you machine, and exim will work for
that. However, you can always read/send mail using Netscape/Mozilla,
and no extra setups are needed.
