Hi All,
Thanks to all those who came and helped at the installfest. The
installfest was great. And I think all the officers and everyone who
was there need some time to rest, so there will be _no_ meeting or help
session tonight.
Our next meeting will be on _Wednesday_ October 10th, at 7pm. Rick
Redman will be talking on many different topics. The following is a
description of this talk:
Rick Redman (Minga) graduated from Purdue's Computer Science program in
1999.
While attending Purdue he was President of PLUG (Purdue Linux/BSD Users
Group).
He was also a member of the COAST/CERIAS security group. Although he was
trained to be a traditional programmer via the CS program, he was
slightly jaded
and bored at the thought of writing code for 40 hours a week. After
graduation
he vowed never to just be another 'coder. He took a job doing something
he
always dreamed of: being a highly paid and completely legit computer
criminal.
Rick Redman now is a Full-Time Penetration Tester for METASeS
(www.metases.com).
This job involves fully compromising remote networks using all available
techniques, methods, and exploits. His day-to-day tasks involve
breaking into
corporate networks and government offices, discovering new
vulnerabilities and
attack methodologies, writing books on securing systems, reading and
contributing to security mailing lists and websites. Yelling and
screaming at
computers that do no behave properly take up a good part of his day
also.
He will be visiting Purdue on October 10th and 11th to give two very
unique
talks to the general student body.
Wednesday October 10th 7pm : This talk will cover many different
topics including:
1) What it is like being a consultant in the "real world".
2) UNIX/Linux's Place in the corporate world and how it affects
information
security in a work-place
3) Rick will briefly discuss his job, and talk about how and why he does
certain things. Hacker ethics will most likely be a topic of
conversation.
4) General (honest) advice for undergraduates who expect to have a job
someday.
Details about this talk can be obtained at http://plug.purdue.org
----
Thursday October 11th 6:30 pm LAEB B222 - This talk will be directed
more
toward members of CERIAS and those who are interested in Security. The
general
public is invited and encouraged to attend. Topics that will be
discussed are:
1) What it is REALLY like being a penetration tester/ethical hacker
2) Skills and knowledge needed to be a Pen Tester
3) Attack methodologies for attacking different types of infrastructure.
These
can include financial institutions, government agencies, Web
Applications,
theoretical networks, etc.
4) Web Application security assessments.
5) Horror stories of the worst security blunders
6) How Rick ended up being an ethical hacker, and how you to can become
one too!
In general both talks with be very informal and will be followed by Q&A.
Rick
is known to be long winded and some what of a spaz. Expect to be
entertained.
You can contact Rick directly at: minga@metases.com
