I've done the XMMS thingy using Sawfish's Shortcuts setup with GNOME. 
 If anyone wants to do it, just bind the keys to run the respective 
shell command.
xmms --fwd
xmms --rew
xmms --stop
xmms --play

fyi. on my keyboard the commands are bound to
Super-M-C-n
Super-M-C-p
Super-M-C-s
Super-M-C-d
respectively

Easy as Pie...
haven't bothered with volume controll yet...
