OK, here I am a freshman, CPT-TNT major...and a self proclaimed heavy
downloader. I have experienced the ResNet caps to their fullest extent.
Of course I have been formulating my own theories and ideas about how these
caps are implemented and if they were truly caps or just poor network
performance. I have reviewed the network link stats pages, and done much
testing, etc..I even sent a very professional style email to ResNet asking
about their methods of capping and what the guidelines for abuse are on
their system, but did not receive a reply.

I joined this group today and hope to attend PLUG and join up. I read
nearly all the posts back to about the 9th or so.. so I have read all the
posts on the "ResNet" thread and various others that are related to network
performance and others Although I am not running Linux as my OS on this
comp right now (WinXP Pro final actually, which is by the best Windows yet)
but I have experience with Linux and in fact have another computer sitting
in the corner that I haven't up in my room yet. It was my LAN server back
home, which was a transparent proxy (ip masquerading or NAT is the term I
think?) and I have been installing and otherwise messing around with Linux
since like Red Hat 5.2. and most recently I have been using Mandrake since
about 6.0 I'm not great, but I know enough. :)

OK now that all that is out of the way, basically I am writing to hopefully
get an idea of how things are set up here at Purdue. the server names,
functions, network setup, OSes, unusual protocols, interesting things,
difference between ResNet and Academic networks, and the routers that
control them, what are expert and mentor (I know what they are, but do they
have any functions on the network that are not immediately obvious. what's
the difference between expert and mentor I have an acct on expert, but what
about mentor? my login wont work there) So if any one can please email or
post any and all information about the network that would be MOST
appreciated

Sorry if this post makes me seem ignorant or stupid, I promises, I am not.
Just trying to get a feel for what's going on around here. :)

Thanks a lot,
Brad
