Why worry? Put apt-get update ; apt-get -yud dist-upgrade in a cron job.
I do, and my apt cache is fresh whenever I need it, with no downloading
other than what happens in the middle of the night while I'm not waiting
for it, not watching it, and not caring how fast or slow it goes.
